This weekend we headed up to Dick's to get some much-needed running shoes! As we pull up to the parking lot Jeremy swerves left, busts a U, and says nervously, "Let's try the other door!"I look back in our wake and spot a gang of little cub scouts/boy scouts, with signs and tins of popcorn....ahhh, my husband the avoider! So we scoot around the side and aim for the other entrance. No dice! The little guys have every possible entrance covered.
It's not that Jeremy has bad memories of cub scouts, or even that he doesn't like popcorn, I just think he hates the awkward exchange that happens when you are being sold to...even if they are just short of 3 feet tall! =)
So we approach the side entrance and they spot us coming at least 100 yards away...and start forming a pack...then the one wearing goggles... yes, I said goggles (hey, it was raining at the time)....meets us almost half way into the parking lot, because he is *that* excited about getting us to buy his popcorn! And then in his cutest and most pleading voice ever says, "Would you like to buy some popcorn from us, ppllleeeeaassseeee?" Jeremy froze on the spot and temporarily was mute, so I said, "Sorry buddy, not this time, but good luck!"
...and then to make matters worse, the kid turns, hunkers his shoulders down, and makes an audible.... "Ohhhh man!" It was the worst sound ever and made you feel like you might just be kicked out of heaven for this one.
As we walk through the doors I hear another customer tell the goggled-kid that he would think about it while he was shopping and let him know on the way out. I mean what is worse for the kid...immediate rejection...or false hope?
We made it out of the Dicks with my shoes and without another pitch from the boy scouts....and headed to Auto Zone for a little light bulb replacement work on Jer's Honda....and who should be waiting by the front door of Auto Zone...you've got it... the boy scouts!
Needless to say I think we disappointed like 5-8 little boy scouts this weekend - by the third stop their technique had almost worked on me...I felt so bad turning the kids down I was *that* close to going for the caramel corn!
How about all of you...would you have bought some popcorn? (use the poll below)

I am exactly like Jeremy on this one!
As a life-long Girl Scout, I think I would have fallen prey and bought some! I know how frustrating it is to be out there, but at the same time it's a valuable learning experience for them. Ahhh rejection...
We never carry cash. I think it's about time these types of clubs accept credit cards for their sales! I would be much more inclined to buy if I could just swipe my card! Plus then we would get airline miles. :)
Hmm I know that defeats the purpose of the donation but convenience is key!!
