G. I. Jeremy

Sorry I didn't get this up sooner, but wanted to share pics of Jeremy's permanent cast! We headed to the doctor last Friday to have them take off his splint and put the real thing on!

The cast technician asked Jeremy was color cast he wanted and Jeremy said he didn't want a color. So I took it upon myself to flip through the color swatches and pick one for him anyways...here's the selected color:

Yep, that's right, He now has a camo colored cast! =) Look, it was better than my first choice, pink!

Literally one day after he got his cast on I caught him outside playing the very sport that wounded him....frisbee! Here he is out back with our friend Dana, playing left handed.

In fact, his left-handed frisbee experiment went so well that he still wants to play this weekend in the local San Antonio Ultimate hat tournament that he has helped organize. He has already told me that I am in charge of helping him "rig up something" on his hand so that he can play tomorrow. So is it my wifely duty to:
a) Help him make a super padded sling
b) Laugh and point at his currently broken hand and the scars on his leg for proof of why this is a bad idea
c) Tell him to go for it, but if anything happens send him back home to South Dakota for good!

What do you think?

This was supposed to help me, right?

So I've been really, really, really, wanting an iphone, but having a hard time justifying the cost of the new service, changing carriers, etc.

Instead, I decided to keep my old phone and get a different toy.... the Garmin nuvi 360. Since I am going to be on the road for the next 7-8 weeks with biography projects I thought this would be a good little investment as I'm driving through Shamrock, Texas and trying to find the closest Starbucks!

It arrived yesterday, and today was the inaugural use for a drive half way across town. It really shouldn't have been too hard to use. I had already typed in the address and was pressing the "Go!" button, when suddenly my phone rings. I'm trying to answer the phone, listen to the GPS lady's voice, and swerve around a bus...all at the same time! Then a little screen pops up that tells me I cannot press screen buttons and drive at the same time, since that is not safe! Grreeeeeaaaat!

I finally get off the phone only to realize that in my haste I have now told the GPS to drive me back home and I'm headed in the total opposite direction! Many minutes and stops later I finally get the Garmin up and running again and I am feeling okay...Left here, right there, 200 feet and turn right. Okay, I can see how this might be helpful...pause...look up... Why am I suddenly in front of a big military ground entrance?

I still roll down my window (because my GPS unit has told me that we have arrived), and the guard asks me what my business is. I respond "To see Evelyn!" He looks curiously at me and I start to realize that I must not really be at Evelyn's apartment complex. No, this definitely looks like a high military security entrance and not that of a retirement community!

Apparently the Garmin wanted me to take a short cut through a military base - not sure that is really legal unless I have credentials! =)

Needless to say I'd give the unit a F for today's performance but I'll let you know if I get to explore any new restricted areas thanks to my new little friend!

Hanging with the 'Rents

My parents came down to visit last weekend, so I thought I'd share a few of the highlights! We headed down to the Riverwalk and the Christmas lights were still up, so it was a beautiful night!

Mom and I decided to wear scarves, though I think it might have been about 65 that night! =)

We stopped off at one of the riverside restaurants for appetizers and drinks! Though I had to laugh when they brought out our $12 quesadilla appetizer, cut into quarters. The slices were about the size of a quarter too! Let's just say I'm glad they gave us chips and salsa too.

The next day we headed up to Fredericksburg, to my Dad's very favorite bakery, "Rather Sweet Bakery & Deli." He is like a kid in a candy shop up there, and we headed home with lemon bars, brownies, mini key lime pies, and about 5 other tasty treats!

That evening we took them out to Longhorn Cafe, for some of our favorite (and cheap) burgers in town. And yes, there was a balloon animal guy there. I convinced him that Jeremy wanted something special....and we ended up with this. Yes, that would be a toilet. Even with the little flush lever! I'm already afraid of how Jeremy might get back at me for this one! =) Oh wait, he broke his hand the next day - that would do it!

Doctor #2

Yesterday we headed to Doctor #2, the hand specialist. They took Jer back for his x-ray and when he came back he looked really sad. When I asked him what was wrong, he said he had overheard the x-ray tech saying his thumb was broken too! Greeattt, this should be a fun recovery process!

But luckily, when the doctor finally came over, we found out that Jer had overheard them talking about another patient! So Jer's injury stands at the 4th and 5th metacarple fractured. Here's an x-ray of a similar injury, but not Jer's:

It's amazing how much better we felt getting this news, based on the fact that we thought his thumb was broken too. Maybe that would be a good technique for doctors.... "So, we think we will have to amputate...just kidding, you have to be in a cast for 6 weeks!"

That photo of Jer is how he is supposed to walk around for the next 10 days, with his arm elevated to reduce swelling, so they can put the real cast on next Friday. So, if you see him walking around town, make sure that arm is up! =)

As he walked out of the doctor's office yesterday I couldn't help but crack up as I watched him walk to his car with his arm out at a 90 degree angle... and wonder how long that would last!

Doctor #1

Today Jer's headed to his primary care physician so that he can actually get a referral to see a hand specialist, so he can finally get it looked at properly. I seriously was about to strangle his doctor's office assistant yesterday, and still might today!

They wouldn't return my 9am phone call for an emergency referral because they had a backlog of other work to do first. Who says that anyways?

Then when I called back at 3:45pm, they told me he wasn't one of their patients. Oh, yes, that was because they had his name spelled wrong in the system...kind of like they had it mis-spelled all last year when we needed help with his broken leg.

So when I spelled it S-E-I-F-E-R, they suddenly had a file for him!

Hopefully they will see him today so that he can go get his hand checked out by the specialist tomorrow. Man, it is just like last year. They really make you jump through hoops to get taken care of. Is it bad if I am already losing my patience?!?

Deja Vu Anyone?

As some of you may remember, Jeremy and I rung in the New Year 2008, with Jeremy's broken leg and some pain killers...

We had only been married 6 months and suddenly we were looking at 6 -8 weeks of bed rest and an entire year until he would be healed!

Well, I was happy to report that as of November 28th, 2008, three surgeries later, we were healed! I say "we" because it truly was an accomplishment for the two of us!

We rang in 2009 (a mere 4 days ago) laughing about the crazy year we had in 2008, and remembering that we really hadn't even stayed up until midnight last year because we were so conked out from his leg injury and going to all the doctors, etc.

We made a toast to a new and healthy 2009 and started to countdown until our "honeymoon cruise," the one that we had to postpone last year, because of his injury (only 40 days away).

Until last night that is... I get that call that I never wanted to get...."Honey, I think I broke something!"

Let's just say that I have to open up the file folder that I never wanted to open again. The one that has every single doctors bill and invoice from last year. It was almost an occupation in itself keeping track of everything. (And yes it is almost 3 inches thick!)

So hopefully we'll know more about the hand injury this week, but so far urgent care x-rays show the 4th and 5th fingers broken in his right hand. All I can say is, at least it isn't his leg again, or I might have been sending him back to South Dakota to spend some quality time with his parents! =)

Ringing in the New Year

We had a fun new years... It started with some cheese fondue - and a super tasty recipe from my brother's girlfriend Lauren.

Then we decided to take a break, so we would have room for a panini later. Jeremy decided to snack on triscuits and that canned spray cheese stuff. Explain to me 1) Why he needs more cheese after the fondue? 2) Who really eats that spray cheese stuff anyway? He tried to tell me it is different, but I still don't believe him!

Here's the panini in production!

Yummy, toasted goodness!

And finally, to top the night off we had lava drinks.... they are supposed to look like a lava lamp! Not too bad!

That's the update from me...So Happy New Year to all of you!!
