Baby Zoe

Another baby to announce!! And even though Mike and Lisa did not opt to name this little girl after me, I will take it as a compliment that little Zoe Annabelle did try to come on my birthday!

Here are Lisa, Mike, and little Zoe sporting the leopard print.
She was born August 10, 2009, at 9:30pm.

She's already rooting for Jesuit, I better go get her an Ursuline Bear quick!

Here's Mike, already taking on the fatherly duties...very impressive! Mike and I go way back to first grade. We were both in the same Sunday school, and had our first communion together. I like this snapshot...it almost looks like he got stuck wearing a veil with flowers too!

Congrats Mike and Lisa! We are so excited for you two...can't wait to see Zoe!

Ultimate Sugar Rush

While we were in Atlanta we took Sunday afternoon to be tourists...and headed to the Coca Cola Tour...with promises of a room filled with as much coke as you want!

The guided tour took about 16 minutes and then you were free to roam the place as you wish...Jeremy just wanted to find the tasting room. In fact, we ate lunch just before going inside and we weren't allowed to order any kind of drink with our meal so that we could "save ourselves to drink as much soda as possible!" I was not a big fan of this technique...but Jeremy is a big proponent of making room in the belly!

"Pop Art"...get it!

At last, we have found the final frontier...the tasting room!

The room was divided into continents and you could go to each circular dispenser to try the different soda brands by region.

I'm pretty sure these flavors were the ones from Africa!

This is Jeremy on his first round of samples...notice he is still happy.

I just fought off ten 8-year olds to get a very bad soda sample from the Asia area...definitely not worth the work or the fact that my feet are now stuck to the floor because it is so gosh darn sticky! Imagine what the floor mush look like with 500 people all trying soda from over 1,000 different fountains!

Okay, here Jeremy's smile is fading a little bit...we have made it to the back of the room where all of the American colas are!

Okay, he officially has a sugar headache...notice the grimace. "Get me out of here!" But just so the record shows he did drink his souvenir coke bottle about 6 hours after this photo was taken!

Take your husband to work day

Bet you've never heard of this holiday before, "Take your husband to work day!" I am here to tell you it exists and is on Saturday, August 15th.

Last weekend we took a great trip to Atlanta for one of my very special biography projects. This is the first time that I have been able to bring Jeremy along, since the job was going to be done in a weekend.

We added a new element to our services at Texan Biographer, and now save a loved one's story on video. Yes, they get to be a movie star for a day...and it's fun to capture their voice, laugh, smile, and personality too!

We hired this amazing video crew in Atlanta. They shoot for 60-minutes, the Today Show, NBC Nightly News, etc..... So they had top of the line HD equipment, playback monitors, the best lighting, etc. I had the chance to pretend I was Barbara Walters for the day...."and action!"

Here I am setting up for the first interview!

Skip, one of the shooters, is checking out the scene behind me, while I'm going over the questions for the grandpa!

Now the Grandpa is in the hot seat...and I guess I did pull a "Barbara Walters," since there were a few visible tears on some of the tough subjects. That's when I know I'm doing my job...capturing that emotion on film!

Jeremy was our official "behind the scenes photographer for the day." Though I did look over to him at one point and see him sleeping in the chair during one of the interviews...not sure if that is a good sign!

And the final interview together...fun to get both of them on tape at the same time and find out who really made the first move!

All in all it was a fun weekend (blog entry about Atlanta activities to come). Can't wait to get to the editing suite to pull it all together. This will be the first project we've completed with both the biography and video....so it will be fun to show off!!

In a sappy way, I finished this weekend on a big high. I just kept thinking that because we took this weekend's amount of time to film this great couple, their kids and grandkids will always have a piece of them to enjoy. Pretty cool feeling!

Enchilada Challenge

So I've lived in San Antonio for over 10 years now, but up to this point I don't think I've ever really tried to cook Mexican food, except for the occasional taco salad...and I'm not sure that counts as "cooking!" ...more mixing!

Jeremy's favorite thing after cheeseburgers are enchiladas....you can see the cheese theme continues. I decided to finally take on the Enchilada Challenge! (Yes, I do think I've been watching too much Top Chef when I am creating my own cooking challenges...and with no video camera or spectators.)

I found a great cooking blog called Pioneer Woman, so I decided to try out her recipe for enchiladas to prove that I could conquer the Mexican cuisine...or at least make something better than Taco Cabana! Plus her blog has as least 30 how-to photos for every recipe...you almost don't even have to read...my kind of blog!

Alright, set up the laptop (with recipe) outside of the splatter zone in the kitchen....check!

Make the ground beef, mix in green chilies, and make the tomato-y spicy enchilada sauce....and simmer forever....check! (Oh, and sneak a couple tastes of the stuff...you know it is good when you would already eat it as is, and you haven't even gotten to the next step!)

Make a really big mess on the stove top... notice the tomato sauce splatter...it hit places I never thought it could hit! ....check! (I'm still finding red spots weeks later!!)

Get your assembly line together, cilantro, black olives, green onions, corn tortillas (they actually are really good in this recipe...otherwise I usually go with flour!). Then start stuffing and rolling...and stuffing and rolling...and see if you can hire any of the neighborhood kids for this part of the process...as long as they have clean hands! =)

And once that is done, your casserole might look like this....Notice the crazy amount of dishes in the background. I tried to convince Jeremy that they had his name all over them...ummm, unfortunately, I didn't get a "check" on this one!

Throw it in the oven, and ta-da..."Cheesy goodness" as Jeremy likes to say!

Put a little sour cream on top and you are set! I have to say that these were even better than what you order in a Mexican restaurant...super tasty! I knew they were a hit when Jeremy said, "I would go running every day if it meant I could eat these enchiladas for dinner every night!"

I only wish they hadn't taken like 2 hours to make....but if I had some extra hands in the kitchen it might have gone faster. Sooooo, if you are looking to add a little spice to you life this week, and you're not on a diet, and you want to impress the fam....try out this recipe! I think you'll love it!

This is "Senora Rory" signing off! =)

Tour Guide Duty

This has been a whirlwind week! On Monday night my good friend Chiara arrived, along with her boyfriend Paolo. Chiara and I worked together at Intercos, in Milano Italy, over 6 years ago! I can't believe how quickly time has flown by...I was their official tour guide this week and tried to show them everything Texas!

First I scored them a nice room at the Emily Morgan hotel, just a few feet away from the Alamo, and only $60/night...since I got it through Priceline....gotta love it!

On Wednesday we headed up towards Austin and made a pit stop in Gruene, and of course had to eat at the Gristmill! (notice my really cool bruises from flipping the gigantour tires on Wednesday).

I am happy to say that I introduced them to "ranch sauce" for the first time...and they loved it! Then I tried to tell them that Jeremy puts it on pizza, hamburgers, and pretty much anything he can. This they did not believe!

Then, it just so happened that my Dad was in Austin for the day, so we picked him up and he was our tour guide for the afternoon. Apparently, even though I did take Texas history, and he didn't, he knew more about the Alamo and the State Capital than me. It was great! We hit Whole Foods (where we saw heirloom tomatoes in yellow, orange, and purple...and Chiara was beyond stunned!) "These are NOT tomatoes...Tomatoes are Red!!" Then we went to the Capital and the UT Stadium.
The night wouldn't be complete without a stop at Rudy's!

Molly was our driver, after we watched her win her sand volleyball game at Aussies! All in all a really fun night! Now I just have to go research what a jackalope is...Chiara and Paolo kept asking me about them and I didn't have a good answer! =)

Birthday Bonanza

Okay, so a little late on the birthday update! We went out to dinner at a place called Coco Chocolate Lounge. They make all things chocolate, so it was a good choice by Jeremy!

We tried the warm fresh herb goat cheese dip for an appetizer. Jeremy got beef burguignon, and I tried the rack of lamb with spiced orange and white chocolate chutney. I know....there was chocolate in everything!

Then for dessert Jeremy had helped make the famous Werner birthday cake...yes, another tradition. This recipe won the Pillsbury cook-off in 1988, and has been a mainstay in our house ever since!
I had a piece on Sunday, my birthday, and then headed out of town for work. Mind you, I did leave an entire birthday cake behind. But let me tell you how this cake situation went down. I can still vivdly remember the phone call...

Rory: "I am almost back in town from this five hour drive"
Jeremy: "Oh good, glad you are getting close."
Rory: "I can't wait to have a piece of my birthday cake!"
Jeremy: "Oh, about that, maybe we should talk!!?"
Rory: "What do you mean talk?"
Jeremy: "Well, I didn't think you'd be back until Friday, soo...."
Rory:"You ate the WHOLE cake! As in, there is no more of my birthday cake left!"
Jeremy: "Well, it was really good, if that helps!"

So fair warning, if you make this cake for your family, guard your pieces very closely....or else! =)

Tire Flipper

So I think I am only supposed to put good pictures of myself up on the blog, but decided that today's accomplishment was worthy of a real photo....just to show how down and dirty I can really get with my Crossfit workouts!
No, I did not just get a job as a mechanic! This is me after my workout this morning. Since I was the only one in the class today, Stephen, my trainer, decided that we would do something "more dynamic." I could only wonder what that meant...and not in a good way.

The first part of the workout we flipped tires....see the photos below...and I think it is even harder than it looks!

My tire was about 250 lbs, hence the nice dirty end result of the photo below!

We flipped them 25 times, did 50 burpees (an exercise which would have been better if never invented), and then we ran 2.5 miles! Craziness! Still trying to get my hands back to a normal color...might need to find a degreaser this afternoon!
